I Love My Mom/Dad: Being a Transgender or Transsexual Parent
Transgender and transsexual parents have unique concerns regarding how their gender affects their children, their partners, and the life of the family. The non-conforming presentation of a transgender parents, or the full gender transition of a transsexual parents, present many complex challenges. Children’s response to the parent’s gender presentation or transition depends upon the child’s age, the relationship with that parent, and the reactions of other people in the environment. This workshop will explore the challenges faced by transgender and transsexual parents and their children at various ages. We will review some of the research, resources and literature on this subject and discuss concerns and situations such as, assessing the needs and capacities of young children, older children, and adult children, when and what to tell children, communicating with the children’s school and friends, dealing with co-parent concerns regarding gender expression, and the extended family.

Workshop discussion at The Empire Conference, Thursday through Saturday, May 20 – May 22, 2010 in Albany New York.

Double Lives 9:00 AM Saturday April 24
This is a guided discussion for people who experience themselves as leading double lives. You may have an internal identity that is never expressed, or is expressed part-time. There are many reasons that people lead double lives: it may be the only way to express more than one identity, it may be a compromise for practical reasons, or it may be part of gender exploration or transition. For many people the double-life experience is a life-long challenge. I will be co-leading a workshop:

Luncheon speaker at the IFGE 2010 Capital Conference in Washington DC, Thursday April 22-Sunday April 25.
"The Evolution of the Standards of Care: Towards Empowerment and Access" The World Professional Association for Transgender Health is currently revising The Standards of Care for the Treatment of Gender Identity Concerns. This talk explored some of the misperceptions regarding the current 6th version (2001), and what we might expect for the next version. Expected changes in the new version include the depathologization of gender experience, increased recognition of gender diversity, and protocols which best support access to care.

See the page on "Gender Identity" for a fuller list of past presentations.
